i have a lot of pictures here because it was pretty interesting to watch. i took lots of pictures for matt so he could see what was happening at home while he was at work. he was so bummed he missed the action. apparently it's a guy thing? ;)
these guys worked hard all day. to our surprise, though, it went pretty quickly. they had fun doing it too. i told matt they had to put a little humor into their labor intensive work. they played with reese's bubbles, the guy at the top of the tree below was singing opera up there, and they were jabbing each other with the bark.
we watched through the backdoor. the little boy in the family made up for what the big boy didn't get to do. he was most intrigued by the heavy machinery - definitely all boy like his father.
the 80+ year old tree was hollowed out nearly 20 feet up.

now that's hollow.
since we couldn't go in the backyard b/c of the safety factor we watched a little from the front porch. there was action out there too.
who needs trees when we can play with rocks?!
back to the backyard. this is the stuff i figured matt would want to see, so i started snapping through the kitchen window.
and finally the end result. nothing fancy, just mound of mulch. we hope to lay grass down at some point.
i feel the need to mention that we will do our share for the environment by planting another tree in the backyard, plus one or two more in front yard. matt is thinking live oaks.was it almost like you were there with us today???

Cool stuff! Definitely glad you got it down. Live oaks would look REALLY cool...they grow fairly quickly, too.
yes, it was almost like being there. how long did it take? do you have a lot less shade, or is that your neighbor's problem?
Wow. That was a big tree. Tyson would have loved watching that too!I love live oaks. Miss them.
I must say that the more I think about it, live oaks would be a TREE-mendous selection ;-)!
So sad. We had to cut FIVE trees down in our backyard because it was so shady, the yard turned into a mosquito infested swamp every time it rained and no grass would grow. It was very sad tho. But very fun to watch the men climb like monkeys up and down the trees!!
Be careful of live oaks - I *think* live oaks are the ones whose roots do not run deep at all. I have a very clear image of seeing a humongous oak overturned in my aunt's yard after a very light rain. If the ground gets soggy, they can just topple. And since your neighborhood is like hurricane alley...
